Students Beyond War

Well over 130 high school students from Des Moines area school staged a die in, to dramatise
the effects of war in a far off land, to people who are insulated and seem uninterested in U.S. policy around the world. The group, Students Beyond War have made there voices heard in other ways as well. Several students have occupied U.S. Senator Grassleys Des Moines office in an effort to change Grassely Iraq stance and where arrested when Grassley did not respond, and some students where charged with tress passing. they also occupied Congressman Boswells office.
The students are a good example of resolving to speak truth to power.

Dingman Peace Award: JustFaith

JustFaith: A Social Justice Education and Experience.

The Des Moines area JustFaith program, in it's 6th year, has been awarded the prestigious Bishop Dingman Peace Award, by Iowa's Catholic Peace Ministry, a multi denominational non-profit organization, dedicated to education and action as it pertains to the areas of Peace and Justice issues.
The JustFaith mission, "Empowering People of faith to develop a passion and thirst for Justice", is the primary reason for bestowing the honor of the Bishop Dingman Peace Award on this group. The success of the JustFaith process in transforming peoples lives into people of action, and witnesses to injustice, is most evident in the graduates of the program.
With over 90 graduates to date the Des Moines area Justfaith program continues to grow and evolve, with three metro area class groups meeting weekly for 30 weeks, and several immersion experiences, as well as much reading, it is a challenge, but richly rewarding commitment.
Bishop Maurice J. Dingman, was the Bishop of the Des Moines diocese 1968 until he resigned do the health reasons, in 1986. Bishop Dingman died in 1992. As a leader in social justice issues such as the farm crisis with foreclosure a common practice, and an ongoing U.S. military involvement in Central America, as some of the many issues, Bishop Dingman courageously stood in solidarity with the powerless.
Catholic Peace Ministry is proud to present the Dingman Peace Award to the leadership, and participants of the Des Moines area JustFaith community!
JustFaith is a national program supported by Catholic Relief Services, Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Charities USA .

Keep the Solstice Peace Fire Burning

This Solstice fire in southern Iowa in 2003, was a beacon for Peace, with the flame still burning
in our hearts. May the care given to the building of this great light be an example and inspiration, to continue on in the work of building a more peace filled world.

My Name is Rachel Corrie: The Play in her own words.

Rachel Corrie died at the age of 23 on March 16 2003. Rachel was killed in an attempt to stop an Israeli military bulldozer from demolishing a Palestinian families home, to clear land, for the building of a wall to contain Palestinian families on Israeli designated land in Rafah. Rachels words are powerful and compelling, as well as challenging the status quo, and in action. Let her legacy move us to social action.

Media .... Mediocrity ....
http://theuptake.org/?p=420
Here we take a look at how some of the media do business. Do we stick to the mundane story of people talking on telephones or do we move with the flow of a real story? And what is the story? Is it Obama's misleading position on the Iraq war, or is it the fact that his media point person wants to hide Obama's inconsistent policies, from the media with Bush type control tactics?
Or maybe, like we see here, it is media's lack of interest in getting the story at all!!

Young People speak out against the Iraq War.

In the fall of 2007, in the 5th year of the U.S invasion of Iraq, a small group of Des Moines Iowa area high school students occupied U.S. Senator Charles Grassleys, Des Moines office, in the Federal Build. This was a simple yet profoundly courageous act by these young people, in direct defiance of respected authority figures. It is both inspiring and challenging to all Americans who passively accept what government figures tell them and media professionals parrot back as policy, for the supposed protection of American "values and way of life". If more people would take there citizenship as seriously we could have ended this debacle of a war a long time ago.
